The Thinker
Auguste Rodin (1840 - 1917)
The Thinker is a bronze and marble sculpture by Auguste Rodin, whose first cast,
of 1902, is now in the Musée Rodin in Paris. The Thinker was originally meant to
depict the Italian poet Dante pondering his poem The Divine Comedy. This poem is
considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a
masterpiece of world literature.
The statue is often used to represent philosophy, intellect and poetry which are all
components of the classical educational opportunities offered at Cougar Mountain Academy.
This bronze replica was donated to the Academy in 1992 to commemorate its thirtieth anniversary.
